Seminar for better utilization of NGS was held at the University of Zambia

2022.10.6

On June 1st and 2nd, the seminar “Next Generation Sequencing Approach for the Research of Zoonotic Diseases” was held at University of Zambia (UNZA).

Next Generation Sequencer, NGS allows massive and fast-speed DNA sequencing, technology applied in the research on pathogens such as bacteria and viruses.

This seminar has featured the use of NGS and there were as many as 42 participants for the lecture part, both from inside and outside of the University of Zambia. The seminar has also offered hands-on learning opportunities for 16 people including engineers and students.

On the first day of the seminar, Dr. Hayashida from Hokkaido University International Institute for Zoonosis Control, and Dr. Misheck Shawa guided the participants. They leant about genome sequencing by NGS, and its data analysis methods.
On the second day, Dr. Lavel Chinyama Moonga from the School of Veterinary Medicine of UNZA has offered a guide for amplicon sequencing and microbiome analysis, and Dr. David Squrre from West Lunga Conservation Project has shared a case study on the understanding of African trypanosomiasis and piroplasmosis using NGS. This stimulating seminar has invited many questions from the audience, reflecting the high interest in NGS as means of gene analysis methods.
